3 Questions - The Jungle Era

1) What qualities did Sinclair believe a person must have to succeed in Packingtown?
    - He believed if the man was a hard worker and minded his own business would succeed; However, that was not the case. Only men who were sent to Jurgis's father by the boss or whom spied upon his fellows would succeed in Packingtown.

2)According to the passage, what is the plant owner's main goal.
    - According to the passage, the plant owner's main goal is to make as much money as possible and doesn't care how it is done.

3) What does Sinclair mean when he says, "...there was no place in it where a man counted for anything against a dollar....?"
     - I believe this means a dollar was more important than another man, because in this passage it tells us how there was no loyalty, decency nor any honesty in the workforce of Packingtown, it was just a race to be the fastest so you could earn money and not be replaced

Now a days, we have the FDA which regulates many things such as: food, human prescription and non-prescription drugs, vaccines, medical devices, electronic devices, cosmetics, tobacco products and many of other things. The FDA enforces these regulations by having nine primary centers and offices that are responsible for regulatory oversight and enforcement.

The US an Imperialist Nation?

In my opinion I believe the US should become a Imperialist Nation because as Theodore Roosevelt said during the independence of Cuba, "If we now let it be replaced by savage anarchy, our work has been for harm and not for good."
In other words he is implying if we help Cuba gain itself independence it could quickly ruin itself without a structured government, which would be harming more than helping itself.

Maxim Gun

Designed by Hiram Maxim, the maxim gun was water-cooled, by a jacket around the barrel that held about a gallon of water, and ammo was supplied but a fabric belt which held the ammunition. The gas produced by the explosion of the powder in each cartridge itself generated a recoil which served to continuously operate the gun's mechanism causing it to need no external power. All of it would be mounted on a sledge. The gun weighed between 40-60kg (88-132lbs) making the operation of it require a four to six man team. Hiram decided to show his invention to the British Army and in 1887 his gun was test. Although the gun passed all tests the British government did not allow use of the gun, however; later that year the gun was demonstrated to the German Army and was then authorized for use. Later on the Maschinengewehr, Vickers and Pulemyot Maxima guns were made all based on the design of the Maxim gun.
